GUYS, I just realized something!!! So next year is going to be the moomin's 80th anniversary. This means that in 20 years the moomins will become public domain!!! I totally forgot about this!! For those of you who were disappointed in Moominvalley season 4 and want to make your own indie projects about it, you have 20 years to make it. The countdown starts now!! Also we'd better not have those crappy horror films like blood and honey. We do not tolerate that kind of crap with this franchise!! 😤
EDIT: I also wanted to add in that the information I provided was mostly how the American government handles copyright. It could be different for Europe so just be ready.
EDIT #2: Guys I messed up so bad on this topic and did not research this properly. I'm so sorry. Apparently for something to be in the public domain the original author has to be dead for over 70 years. Tove Jasson died only 22 years ago. Meaning we still have a long way to go... Sorry everyone. Still don't be afraid to have ideas for like fanfiction and alternate universes!

Me, realizing that in six years I could rewrite “The Love Pawn” as a full-length novel and publish it if I wanted, even including the original text as a bonus at the end.

and you know i’ve always thought that it’s such a shame that all the big name examples we have of “filing the serial numbers off:” like, turning a fanfiction into an original work are ahem. not neccessarily the greatest works of literary fiction BECAUSE LIKE. and maybe this is because of my love for the wonderful “expy” (we should put kaworu in more anime. we should do it more) BUT I FEEL LIKE it can be done awesomely. sometimes i see people’s heavily-AU’d and tonally shifted fanfiction and im like damn man. i’d love to read this as ur original book. i feel like the key is twofold: 1) remember to reintroduce the world and characters properly in the text because you won’t have the fanfiction tags and original property to do that for u and 2) get SILLAY you dont need to keep everything about the original characters..... u can change their hair colours.....their names....anything u want......................................................
then again i have a theory that we only notice these serial numbers being filed off when it’s done sloppily so maybe we do have some good stuff out there....hidden in plain sight.....

Hey quick question, when people talk about their OCs, does that include characters from original works too or is it only about making characters to go into fanworks/just making guys that you then put in various settings?

Tag an IP or blorbo you want to free from copyright/trademark corporate hell
Hey, hot take, but if a company decides they no longer want to distribute a piece of media they own the rights to, then they should be legally required to sign the rights back over to the creator.
They shouldn't be allowed to just sit on the IP for the rest of time, especially if they have no intention of ever releasing it again.

New Things to Beware on the Internet
On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.
Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.
Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".
Tumblr media
This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.
What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.
Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.
What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.
I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.
Be cautious out there.

Fun Fact: in one month (1/1/23), all Sherlock Holmes stories hit the public domain and the Conan Doyle Estate can't do shit! I say this for absolutely no reason but also congrats in advance to the happy couple.

Ok I love the muppets with all the energy I am capable of mustering, but A Christmas Carol is literally a hundred pages. That’s it. The book is like a centimeter thick. Animal Farm has more pages. And it’s not exactly a hard read, it’s written simply and entertainingly because dickens wanted everyone to understand it’s message.
So good job self reporting that you’ve never even seen a copy of the book, let alone picked it up.
